I bet Marco $1 that mod_php would provide a persistent php instance that could be used to do cool stuff outside the context of a particular web request (similar to mod_perl).

If it does, I can’t find it anywhere.  I couldn’t even find any module that would do it.  Sure, I could point to modules such as PHP::Include that could be used in conjunction with mod_perl, but that feels like it’s outside the spirit of our wager.
